Abstract

According to traditional assumptions in Art History, weaving is a craft that involves manual work but not an intellectual one. The field of research, methodology and goal of weaving is defined with further research of textile theories, and weaving in general, as a modernist language that examines the fundamental basis of modernism. The key point for researching Bauhaus textile workshop is to define theorethical framework, which is necessary for understanding weaving as a specific craft (or medium). This paper looks at the starting point – theoretical essays of students from textile workshop of Bauhaus, that served as a foundation for creating weaving theory. This paper also looks to which extent these weaving theories had been implemented in practice. The beginnings and further developments of modern weaving theories are traced and further interpreted through theoretical essays of Bauhaus textile workshop students around 1930s.
