This article presents the work of Veljko Stanojević, one of the most significant protagonists of Serbian modern painting of the interwar period. Stanojević was a modernist of classical formation who developed his artistic expression in accordance with the leading painterly principles that dominated European art during the first half of 20th century. His modernism of neorealist form occupies a prominent place in the history of Yugoslav and Serbian modern art. This especially refers to his early formative period during the 1920s and the 1930s, when he took more active part in the European art scene. Departing from impressionism as the first phase in the artistic development, he continued to develop an authentic style in which the neorealist component will be dominant by the mid- 1930s, at the same time representing distinctiveness and a signifying characteristic of his opus that reached the zenith during his stay and exhibition activity in Paris in 1930s.
