CONFRONTATIONS ON THE RELATION ZENITISM – YUGO-DADA: A JOURNAL AS A PLATFORM FOR A PROPAGANDA BATTLE FOR THE HEGEMONY OF SIGNIFICANCE

As a multimedia and collective work accomplished under the auspices of the Avantgarde, a journal contains components which are in function of verbal confirmation and visual accentuation, as well as affirmation of the key ideas of the movement. In this paper, the focus of explication is directed on the content and the form of the Dadaist journals Dada Tank and Dada Jazz, on the one hand, and, on the other, the Zenitist editions Dada-Jok and Zenit Express/Dada-Jok, as platforms for promoting and confronting these avant-garde, but competitive Yugoslav movements. In 1922, a kind of propaganda war for the hegemony of significance was waged on the pages of the abovementioned journals. Not only the written word was used, but also the graphic design of the front and internal pages, the typographic solutions, as well as the visual symbols and illustrative contributions. Fighting for the priority position of Yugo-Dada and Zenitism as true bearers of the radical upheaval in Yugoslav society, culture and art, Dragan Aleksić and Branko Ve Poljanski relied upon the experiences and solutions of the German Dada in creating the aforementioned journals.
