Abstract

This text explores Warhol’s screen tests and tries to determine their significance for his artistic oeuvre. Approximately five hundred tests were made from 1964 to 1966 and they form a unique gallery of personalities who shaped the New York underground art scene during the 1960s. By examining the intrinsic characteristics of film as the art of moving images, Warhol created exceptional film portraits on the borderline between photography and film, part portraiture and part performance. This text analyzes Warhol’s peculiar approach to film which mostly influenced the hybrid character of his screen tests and indicates that these works can be experienced as sufficient film portraits, or can be examined as an integral part of the artist’s conceptual series and multimedia spectacles, which enabled him to move towards expanded cinema in the period of his collaboration with the rock band The Velvet Underground.
