Abstract

„The Problem of Expression in Drawing”, the text by Ljubo Babić, published in 1959 in Sarajevo’s Izraz, was a conceptual intervention from the perspective of the anti-modernist and generally conservative understanding of national culture. For Babić, the homogeneous visual language of national culture was represented by realism, in which the artist’s root was a drawing, secure and set in a sign of order and regularity. In this way, the drawing and the projected reality of a national, historically confirmed interest were matched by facts of developed consciousness and deep moral standards, predominantly xenophobic and autarchic. Babić intervened in Izraz under the danger that some critics, first of all Grgo Gamulin, would threaten the facts of inter-national consensus with the modernist relativization of art forms, by spoiling of cultural language to question the equality of the survival of Croatian national culture within the framework of the Yugoslav agreement in the 1950s, but also in wider European circumstances of cultural modernization and destalinization.
