WHY DIGITAL ART HISTORY?

The main topic of this paper is digital art history as a new methodological platform, which appeared at the beginning of 21st century, related to digital humanities. The main goal of this platform is connecting humanities with digital technologies. The starting point is so called digital divide, understood as an ambivalence towards digital technologies which became a part of our everyday life, but still insufficiently present in research, especially in humanities. The main issues in this paper are: what are new methodological approaches to research using digital technologies? What are advantages and disadvantages of digital technologies? The Big Image Data related to computer analysis is indisputably dominant and completely new method in art history, but is it the only one? The concluding marks of this paper are related to digital technologies as a new set of possibilities in which image can be used as a research tool and visualization as a method for researching in art history. The starting point for this approach is related primarily to Aby Warburg’s research conducted at the beginning of the 20th century. He introduced mechanical reproduction as a new research tool in art history which opens new possibilities in interpretation of art only with digital technologies. At the same time, it is continuity between art history and digital art history.
