Abstract

Gergelj Urkom is one of the key figures of Belgrade’s art scene during the 1970s and a representative of artistic concepts that belong to the wider context of New art practice. He joined the Belgrade art scene during the late 1960s as one of the members of an informal group of six authors gathered around the Student Cultural Centre (Raša Todosijević, Zoran Popović, Marina Abramović, Gergelj Urkom, Era Milivojević, Neša Paripović), whose art practice marked a radical turn from “moderate modernism” as an ideologically appropriate art language of the time. This article analyzes the early period of artist’s opus and focuses on his activities developed within the context of the Gallery of Student Cultural Centre until 1975, when this group of artists symbolically parted.
